Beauty

This beautiful painting is actually graffiti that appears underneath an overpass in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. It’s directly across the street from the Frames Bowling Lounge. On a recent business trip, I walked past it and was blown away by its transcendent beauty. It’s not small… I am only guessing… 8’ tall and 6’ wide.

I was hurrying to visit Fountain House, whose mission is “Fighting to improve health, increase opportunity, and end social and economic isolation for people most impacted by mental illness.” Fountain House is run by volunteers and staff many of whom have serious mental illness. It is a beacon of promise in the midst of Manhattan, a truly remarkable place.

This trip impressed upon me the undiscovered beauty that surrounds us in seemingly mundane places, truly life-changing and accessible if one takes the time to investigate.

Is there secret splendor in your world waiting to be noticed?

“Sunlight fell upon the wall; the wall received a borrowed splendor. Why set your heart on a piece of earth, O simple one? Seek out the source which shines forever.”
