People and their Pets

When I was a kid I loved to stay up later than my parents wished and watch the Grade-B horror movies that aired in the middle of the night. Frankenstein, Dracula, and of course, the Werewolf. I was a fan of the stars, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney, Jr.

What I didn’t know was that the werewolf, Chaney, had a best friend who was always on set with him. Moose, the 120-pound German shepherd, was a loyal companion.

Moose was revered in the studio, especially after he protected a co-star and Chaney after a horse-drawn buggy accidentally flipped over pinning the two underneath. They were in danger of being kicked by the horse when Moose came to save the day. The canine wedged himself between the actors and the horse until everyone could be rescued.

I love the connection between people and dogs, the inter-species love that sometimes bonds creatures.

Do you have a friend who hails from a different species? Bird, cat, dog, horse, ferret, or something else?
