Getting Innovation Right on the Road

A client told me he will “vouch that your book makes a good travel partner!”

He writes, “I’ve been keeping your book in my backpack. So I thought you’d like to know where your book was over this Thanksgiving break:

  1. Pisac, Sacred Valley, Cusco: These Inka ruins are among my favorite places to visit in Cusco and a good opportunity to test whether I’ve acclimatized to the altitude. The stone complex in the background is called “Inti Watana”…which translates literally to ‘Hitching post for Sun’. If you zoom in, you’ll see a huge stone chunk in the center … and that stone has been shaped to track movements of the sun, moon, stars, etc. Talk about Inka innovation!
  2. Plaza de Armas in Arequipa: While this city in southern Peru does not have much indigenous culture to speak of (but the surrounding mountains do!), it is heavily influenced by colonial architecture. In the background is a beautiful cathedral made using local volcanic ash stone.

(P.S., earlier this year, your book accompanied me to a remote, pre-Inka site in the middle-of-nowhere in Bolivia, but I can’t find that photo.)”

I feel so fortunate to know my books are getting a geographic workout. Thank you, Viral, for your pics and note!
