License!

After 18 months of driving with a learner’s permit, including over 60 hours logged and over 14 hours at night, Ruchi got her license last week!

Last Thursday, we drove to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration as instructed. We provided all the necessary paperwork. They told us to pull our car around the side to the testing location, and when we did, I got a good look at the gas gauge. I saw we were almost out of gas! The instructions state that you must have at least half a tank of gas; otherwise, you are disqualified. Oh no!

We noticed there were two cars in front of us, and so I whipped out my GPS and looked for the closest gas station. I didn’t know if they would call on us in our absence, but I knew if they did, we would be disqualified, so we had nothing to lose. Off we zipped, back-and-forth in less than 10 minutes! Just as we were pulling back in, Ruchi received a text from the MVA, Are you here? I am here, she replied. They had us pull up to the front because we had lost our place in line… Little did they know why!

Unfazed, Ruchi took the test and passed! This was a real rite of passage. Soon she will be helping me on long trips to put in the hours on the highway. In the meantime, we will be sending her back and forth on local errands so she can get some experience driving by herself.
