When I help CEOs lead change, there are four timelines I walk them through:
  1. Immediate Result – What will you do today? Now?
  2. Short-term Wins – What will be your early milestones that generate momentum?
  3. Medium-term Success – How will you hit the bulls eye in 18-24 months?
  4. Long-term Sustainability – How will you build in continuous renewal?

Of these four timelines, #3 is the most important. It is here that you define the bullseye: success. None of the others have meaning unless you know what success is. 18-24 months is the ideal range for achieving significant accomplishments. Define #3 first. Then the others.

What significant success are you aiming for? Define it. When will it take place?
What will you do today?
What milestones are between here and there?
