Late last night my cousin, Eric, and I were walking home after a long day of visiting good friends. As we walked by the Town Hall we saw how the entire city was lit in blue and yellow to show solidarity with Ukraine during the Russian invasion and violence taking place as we walked. Eric took the picture above.
Town Hall was prominent, but the blue and yellow skyline was shared with the theater, the Opera House, the Salesforce Building, and others. Separated by over 6,000 miles the solidarity seems to be rising from the Earth through every institution, organization, and so many, many people. The simple act of lighting a building in the colors of the Ukranian flag demonstrates a global desire to stand with Ukraine in the face of terrorizing destruction.
How do you show solidarity with the causes you believe in and want to see addressed? Climate change, systemic racism, economic devastation, whatever stirs your soul, it is calling to you and asking for a response. Sometimes demonstrating solidarity through visible demonstration is the most powerful response of the moment.
“The first step in the evolution of ethics is a sense of solidarity with other human beings.” – Albert Schweitzer
