I worked with the World Bank, Center for Narrative Studies, and the Center for Association Leadership on the problem of accelerating rapport during professional gatherings. Most conferences don’t begin to gel until about the middle of the second day; too late for some attendees. Our group wanted to know if that process could be improved and accelerated.

We discovered that asking professionals to tell stories in line with the conference objective accelerated collaboration. Through our work, I developed Jumpstart Storytelling, a process that can be introduced in the first 45-minutes of any professional gathering. Jumpstart Storytelling creates a many-to-many relationship and encourages:

  • bridges to be built between attendees
  • accelerated engagement
  • reduced defensiveness over hot topic issues
  • valuing all perspectives
