The View from Dolores Park

The View from Dolores ParkI have adopted San Francisco as a city. My wonderful cousin, Eric, lives out there and I visit him every year. He is a great tour guide and has taken me to the Castro, the Mission, Haight-Ashbury, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, the cable cars, and to close surroundings like Napa Valley and Sacremento. He takes great pleasure in showing me around. The two of us have a great time. My visits are not so much about hitting every tourist spot as they are enjoying his company in the Golden City. Most of our time together is just walking, talking, and of course, eating.

One of my favorite places in Dolores Park, or as it is officially called, Mission Dolores Park. It is a huge grassy set of hills that bunch around like a giant amphitheater. There are often dogs running around free and frisbee throwers moving quickly in and out of those of us who come to sit and watch. The picture above was taken from our recent perch on March 1st.

When we are at Dolores Park I feel like I am at the beach. There are individuals, couples and small parties gathered together in clusters eating and enjoying each other’s company. Laughter can be heard among the many accented voices.

The people are beautiful, dressed in garb from around the world and sometimes next-to-nothing. And very occasionally there is someone who is actually wearing nothing – it is after all San Francisco! The day we were visiting the sun was out, the grass was green and the sky blue with thin clouds; it was gorgeous!

Where are your favorite places to visit, and is there one where you might spend some time this week?

“Who cares about the clouds when we’re together? Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.” – Dale Evans
