A moon shot is a bold vision that unites a
people, making possible extraordinary action and achievement.  To
enroll stakeholders far and wide you need such a vision, a goal that
speaks to your customers, policy makers, evangelists and volunteer
leaders, staff, your industry or sector, and the public at large.

believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal,
before this decade is out, of landing a
man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space
project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more
important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so
difficult or expensive to accomplish… But in a very real sense, it
will not be one man going to the moon–if we make this judgment
affirmatively, it will be an entire nation. For all of us must work to
put him there.

– Special Message to
the Congress
President John F. Kennedy, May 25, 1961

Kennedy did not say, “We must establish ourselves as the pre-eminent
nation on the planet in the fields of science, innovation, and
achievement. We must establish ourselves superior to the Russians. We
must become the superior military superpower in the 20th century. We
must unite our professionals, people of all disciplines and persuasions
to collaborate. And we must inspire the nation with what we are capable
of as a country so that people will ask not what their country can do
for them, but what they can do for their country (as he petitioned
during his inauguration just four months earlier).”

Neil Armstrong on the moonNo,
Kennedy did not lay out this long, convoluted, five-point program for
growth and international superiority. Instead he provided a single
vision, one goal that seemed impossible given the high fail rate of
rocket launches. It was concise, awesome, and galvanizing: “
before this decade is out land a man on
the moon and return him safely to the earth.”

What is your
moonshot? What noble aspiration can you boldly state to bring people
together and rally them to your cause?
