All night long my wife is getting texts that say, “Woot Woot!!” What is this? I am not familiar with this term. So, I looked it up on the holistic brain trust, the Internet. Turns out its origin is ambiguous. One source says it hails from a contraction in Dungeons & Dragons of wow, loot! when a players character came across gold or wealth in the game. Well, in that case, my wife deserves her Woot Woot’s, because she came home with some loot last night: 3 Wammies.
Wammies are the annual awards from the Washington Area Music Association, honoring local talent. Laura left the awards ceremonies with:
* 2014 Contemporary Folk Vocalist*
* tied for 2014 Song of the Year with A Little Note
* 2014 Folk Contemporary Recording for her latest album, Heart of the Great Unknown.
As her husband, it was a thrill just to hear her name read from the podium in the lists of nominees.
The Wammies are a real scene. The whole music community turns up from boogie-woogie greats to amazing Klezmer jazz artists, from electronic remix to grunge reggae. There’s a real buzz in the air and the audience is Shmooze City, a blend of musical all-stars, wannabes with dreams in their eyes, and Washington DC icons.
I was about as proud as I could be of my wife, Laura Baron, for all her persistence and artistry. It was wonderful to see her recognized as a winner in the world of Washington music.
I have two words for Laura: Woot Woot!
