The word competition comes from the Latin competere, “to strive together.” Originally, it wasn’t about defeating someone else. It was about bringing out the best in one another.
Watching our two dogs race through our backyard reminded me of that older meaning. They chase, feint, sprint, and change direction in an instant. One pulls ahead, then the other. Each dog’s energy calls forth something better in the other. Together, they run faster, play harder, and become more capable than they would alone. They also wear each other out much better than I could!
Imagine if we approached our work and our lives that way.The best competitors are the ones whose presence raises our game, sharpens our thinking, stretches our abilities, and reminds us what we’re capable of. This week, try seeking out that kind of competition.
