Getting Away

Sometimes, there’s too much going on, and I need to step away to clear my head.
The weather lightened up last week. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, it was forecast not to drop below 40, so I made my getaway.

Kaya and I headed out to Shenandoah National Park and straight for one of my backcountry spots, where I knew we could be away from all things human.

It was a great trip. Spring hasn’t arrived yet, and there is no green to speak of. Bare trees and bushes covered the ground, and crunchy leaves covered the ground. I found the barren landscape to be starkly beautiful.

Kaya did well sleeping in her spot inside the tent the first night. But the second night, she was ready to get in my bag! At 0400, there was a bark. I cracked my sleepy eyes, and she was right next to me. When I opened my bag, she piled in.

We had some good hikes, and I had one of my favorite treats: eggs, bacon, and coffee in the woods from a fire I built myself.

Overall, I got what I was looking for, and now that the weather is warming up, I know more trips are in store!

What do you do to rejuvenate and renew?
