Every time I turn around it feels like there’s another major, world-changing disruption! Pandemic. Climate change. Social justice. Economic disruption. It’s hard sometimes to just get through life with all these overwhelming circumstances!

My son, Gabe, introduced me to the concept of a hyperobject, an object so big one mind cannot hope to grasp it. In fact, it can be dangerous if you think you can grasp the whole thing. It’s just too big to understand all the complexities and facets.

So, what’s a brain to do?

Drawing on my experience working with complex problems, I’d say there are two complementary approaches: (1) take the time to experience it from your point of view, but don’t confuse that with understanding the whole thing, and (2) work with others who can supply additional views.

Bite off what you can chew. Take the next step. Appreciate the larger picture, and that it exceeds your own abilities. Join in with a community to take on the bigger issues.

How will you take action in an area you care about this week?
