I am now working for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute to create a world free from the stigma associated with mental health. We will bring together organizations and individuals from across the nation to address the “Grand Challenge” of mental health stigma and build a unified strategy and movement.
Mental health stigma impacts all levels of society. Stigma prevents policymakers from crafting laws free of discrimination and stops healthcare workers from providing the best possible care. Stigma keeps people from seeking the treatment they need, robs them of their joy in life and well-being, and worst-case results in ultimate harm.
We already have the support of the Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, the CEOs of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association, and many, many more. This coming February we will convene a team of leaders from many organizations and sectors to design a multi-year collective initiative tol begin early 2022. Our strategy will work to eliminate stigma from all sectors of society: families, schools, religious institutions, media, community-based organizations, businesses, government organizations, and more.
Our initial work includes establishing metrics and sustainable funding models, creating outreach plans to connect to hard-to-reach and underserved communities and populations, building infrastructure to coordinate and communicate evidence-based best practices, hosting pilot projects, and gathering evidence to identify new success models.
I am extraordinarily gratified to have been chosen to lead this initiative! Count on hearing more about it in the weeks and months ahead.
Where does your passion meet your work and how can you use that in the week ahead?
“You have to have a big vision and take very small steps to get there. You have to be humble as you execute but visionary and gigantic in terms of your aspiration.”
