There is a national conversation about racial justice going on. Many organizations are making public statements but then asking,” How do we pivot to action?”
I believe there are three levels of participation that associations leaders should consider when planning any change initiative.
Level 1: People who want to know the territory and how to do the right thing but do not have the bandwidth or interest to do deep reflection.
Level 2: People who are interested in reflecting on how their mental models and behavior perpetuate structural racism.
Level 3: People who choose to take a deep dive into the dark and profoundly disturbing history of our country as they figure out their role in addressing it.
If you want to be a leader, you must choose Level 2 or 3. That’s how you will provide everyone including those who are at Level 1 with the right type of guidance.
