Regular communication with the board throughout the strategic planning process is important, particularly when ambiguous or contentious issues arise. There should be no surprises along the way. However, the board meeting that takes place near the end of the planning process could be the most important piece to the creation of your strategic plan. This board meeting may be the one time everyone is in the room together and ready to think collectively. To be sure that everyone fees respected and valued, has an enjoyable time, and a solid strategic plan is produced make sure to:
- Take time to plan
- Do the prep-work
- Make sure the board has pre-reading material
- Provide expert facilitation
- Meet in advance if possible
- Document the meeting
