We are all doing our best to care for ourselves and our loved ones during great uncertainty. This crisis is hitting us on three fronts simultaneously: health, economic, and social. How we take care is extremely important. Here are four tips guiding my life today:

1. Remain a part of your family’s lives, whether co-located or distant. We are social creatures and it is more important than ever that we are visible to the people we care about. Phone calls, video chats, and for those in your house, meals and special moments are vital to everyone’s mental health. Many of us have consuming work, taking care of business, keeping the trains running. That is vital to our livelihoods and society, but make the time for those that matter most, including you.

2. Empathy and love are great calmers. Everyone is having a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride. Spread that love around to yourself, too! Self-compassion goes a long way as you find your way through the obstacles that present themselves.

3. Keep priorities front and center, whether it’s taking care of customers or spending time with your loved ones, make sure you know what’s most important and set enough time aside to do your best.

4. Don’t overlook rest. We are all running a marathon and need to manage for the long haul. A strategically placed nap can keep you in the games if you’re working long hours.

We are bigger than this situation. We will come out on the other side. We always have and we always will. Humanity is powerful. We have prevailed over greater challenges. And we will again this time.

“One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity.”
